Diospyros whyteana (sometimes known as bladdernut or Royena lucida var. whyteana) is a beautiful ornamental shrub or small tree growing to approximately 5 metres in height and width. Seldom offered for sale in Australia and difficult to locate, this is an ideal plant for those who seek something different for their gardens.
D. whyteana is grown for its vivid red new leaves which mature to a deep glossy green. The shrub's open habit is ideal for displaying its smooth cream-coloured bark and permits smaller plants to be grown beneath. Highly architectural in shape, D. whyteana could be grown as a specimen tree in a lawn or otherwise amongst other plants in the garden. This species may be maintained in pots for many years before being planted-out.
D. whyteana grows best in a sunny or lightly-shaded position and requires little water once established. Small white flowers are produced in spring. D. whyteana is frost tolerant.
